The more passionate you are about interiors and home decor, the easiest it is to feel dissatisfied with your own home. Even when you invest time and money into your abode, it is not guaranteed that it will feel like your dream place.
Sometimes the reason is you aren't there yet in terms of style. Other times though, the reason could be simpler and it is just a matter of perspective to see what is keeping you from fully enjoying your home.
Anytime you feel far from your home's full potential, go through the following six reasons, to understand if any of it applies to you currently.
1. You’re being harsh on yourself for the wrong reasons
You might have not gone through all the renovation and DIY projects on your list lately, but that’s not a reason to beat yourself about it every single day.
Imagine this for a minute:
In a year from now, you’ve completed everything on the list. Yet there are new tasks added in there, as it always happens with lists.
Would you be happy?
When the answer is a clear “No”, then it’s the critic and anxious part inside you that prevents you from enjoying your home as it is. Nothing is wrong with the things you haven’t done yet.
2. You’re saying “yes” without thinking
It’s nice to have people in your life to share your house with. But, when you start dreading the idea of someone ringing the doorbell or calling to say they’re coming over for the weekend, it means you’re overdoing it.
If you require some alone time, say “no” to all commitments and people, until you get the urge for company again.
3. You’re rushing out of the door every morning
Every home has a magical tone in early mornings, something you can’t feel at another time. I don’t usually enjoy that in my home, as I am in a hurry most mornings. On the days I have enough time to linger around, watch TV, prepare breakfast and get dressed unrushed, I clearly notice what I’m missing.
If your schedule permits, try waking up a tad earlier to enjoy the magic of your favorite spot or feel the sun break through all the windows. Rainy and dark days can be quite enjoyable too, as long as you do what you love most.
4. You haven’t set up your home for your daily flow
Unless everything at your house is placed strategically to help you move faster as you prepare in the morning, cook in the afternoon and unwind in the evening (or whatever tasks you go through daily), then your place isn’t working for you at its full capacity.
For example, all you need to get ready in the morning, from washing your face, to doing your makeup, should belong in the same room or as close as possible.
The same logic can be applied to the evening routine or the house cleaning process (putting all detergents and tools in one central place for a small house or creating small stations in kitchen/bathrooms).
5. You’re not decorating for you
The art on your walls belongs to your favorite artist and the kitchen counters are all dressed in your beloved marble, but is it what you really want? Oftentimes the information we absorb daily through the Internet, magazines, TV, radio, and advertisements is so effective that it triggers us to believe that’s what we want.
It’s fun and healthy to try new things and am not assuming all you have at home is dictated by the trends, but there could be something in there that deep inside you know it’s not “you”.
Think in terms of organizing systems (color-coded bookshelves), furniture choice (open shelves in a highly polluted city), colors (Pantone color of the year), and materials (that you don’t know how to clean).
Go a little further and analyze the way you prefer your home to feel like: clean and organized or lived in and cozy? Are you displaying your most loved objects, even if it means plush toys, nude sculptures, or dusty antiques?
6. You’re not getting a second opinion
You could be on a budget, too proud to admit help, have no one to ask or you simply don’t trust others. These could be a few of the reasons behind you not asking for a second opinion. Still, you’re underestimating the power of a fresh pair of eyes.

When you have the feeling that something is not right, but you can’t tell what it is, someone can help you faster and cheaper than you imagine.
Think outside the box and ask precise questions to anyone entering your home, before looking for a specialist. Whatever they say or don’t say, it’s up to you to consider their opinion.
You’d be surprised at the answers on why your living room feels cluttered though. Just saying!
Now tell me, is there something specific not letting you enjoy your home?
~ Love, Lisa ~
