20 ways to celebrate a dear one’s birthday (during the COVID-19 quarantine)

Now more than ever, adults don’t expect anything special or different on their birthday. Some of us might not even be aware of what day and date it is, so everyone will be glad you remembered their birthday. Especially during such difficult and uncertain times, finding reasons to celebrate is pretty helpful in order to shift our attention to something joyful. Thus, it is important make sure not only to tell others when it is your birthday, but also let friends and family know when someone else’s birthday is, so that more wishes and small gestures are transacted between people.

Here are some ideas to help you make someone’s birthday special, ranging from free and simple ones to a few that require more effort and budget.

If you live in the same place

1. Hug them tighter and longer than usual, while wishing them “Happy Birthday”.
2. Put a balloon, a garland, some flowers or a “Happy Birthday” drawing outside their room, so they are surprised as soon as they wake up.
3. Write them a card or a long heartfelt letter, expressing your wishes and feelings towards them. If you feel like it, you can include happy or funny memories you had together in the past, or imagine what you will do together when all this is over.
4. Prepare them breakfast or another meal, make their favourite dish or bake them cookies or another simple desert. Anything you can do will be appreciated, as it’s the gesture that counts.
5. Do their daily house chores or other duties for them, giving them the day off.
6. Let them pick their favourite activities to do together during the day, including what games to play, what movies or shows to watch, what music to listen to, etc.
7. Make handmade coupons (with small favours or date ideas or anything you want) and give them to use in the future.
8. Make a craft or something handmade for them. Pinterest comes to your rescue, even if you had never done anything like this before.
9. Paint a portrait of the birthday person, no matter the level of your drawing skills. The sure thing is you will have fun.
10. Do something they can’t get done right now, like a haircut or a manicure/pedicure, hair dyeing, a massage, personal training or anything that you are moderately good at.

If you don’t live in the same place

11. Pay a delivery for them. Pick something that is in your budget, not dangerous for them to receive and is something they like. It can be anything, but some ideas include: flowers, a cake or box of cookies, a care package, a gift basket, supplies for their hobbies, a book or magazines, something they are running low on.
12. Donate to a cause near their heart in their name.
13. Find old memories and pictures of you two and comment on them over the phone or a video call.
14. If you usually are too busy to catch up often, take the opportunity to make a long leisurely phone or video call and share everything happening in your lives without the stress of time and distractions.
15. If you are a regular customer at some place that currently offers home deliveries, have them deliver a coffee or a meal to the birthday person and pay the delivery guy extra to sing a "Happy Birthday" song to your dear one.
16. If they live alone, spend a portion of the day doing your daily activities together simultaneously over a video call.
17. Discuss your future plans and talk about how you will be celebrating together next year.
18. Throw them a surprise party by making a group video call, by letting everyone know a day before.
19. Buy them a subscription to something fun online, like an extra month of Netflix or other streaming services, a game, a movie they like, an online course etc.
20. If they are self-isolating, do their grocery shopping or pick up medicine for them and drop it outside their door. This is something you should consider doing even when it is not their birthday, to help them minimise their outings, if they belong to the most vulnerable categories.

Numerous studies have shown that happiness and positive behaviour is contagious, so let’s take full advantage of celebrations and special days to show each other love and care, any way we can. Everything that comes from a good place doesn’t go unappreciated, especially during challenging times.

Stay safe everyone!

  1. Today, tattoos are seen as a form of self-expression and have become more widely accepted in society. They are no longer limited to a specific subculture or group of people, and the industry has grown to encompass a diverse range of styles, artists, and techniques in Las Vegas tattoo shops
