Happy links for a Sweeter Sunday

This week has been full of interesting and helpful posts everywhere in blogs and I am still not done with reading everything, which almost never happens. Usually I finish reading all my favorite blogs and their weekend links by Saturday afternoon and on Sunday I am left with nothing. But today is going to be full of reading fabulous articles, taking notes on important ideas and day dreaming of wonderful projects. That is why I am proposing you this way of spending some hours of your Sunday, reading your favorite newspaper and magazines, going through your bookmarked blogs, have a look at everything you downloaded during the week and take notes of everything you find useful.
Better on, if you get inspired and you still have time, try to implement suggestions and tips into your blog, your life or just make future plans. There is something very exciting about going through information and sorting out what you need. Not only you are left with a clearer PC space, but you feed your needs all at once.
If you are passionate enough, excitement might last 'till Monday and what a better way to kiss goodbye the weekend and kick start the new week! Have a Sweeter Sunday folks :)

Today I want

Today is going to be 32 degrees C and from my experience these last days the city is going to feel unbearably hot and humid. Adding the urge I have to get away and soak my feet, today I want to...

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6

And immediately start the fun...

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 8 / 9

The next day I just want to...

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6

Nothing impossible here right? Ok, maybe the convertible and Jamie Oliver details are kind of unavailable right now. But I am pretty happy with what is left.
Have a nice day :)

Editing

I just caught myself editing the image I just posted a while ago. Well, I just found it embarrassingly overloaded with graphics, while the message itself could be enough. In case you do this occasionally or you decide to do it at one point, I am kindly suggesting you to do it as often as I can. According my graphic design style, I tend to be more on the vivid and bold style rather than minimalistic design (unless it is really clever and expresses everything needed), and I have been often struggling with editing down, but when it feels right, I am not afraid of minimal. This is a very minor example, but it gave me a very good start about a real topic regarding visual design.
Have a look at how I cut down the extras (I was trying step by step, as you see, still hoping to keep something - huh).

How is blogging changing me for good

It is very soon to assume big things, but until now I have noticed some small and some big changes in myself and I am happy most of them are positive. Of course, I can't deny my eyes are more red than ever and I have dark circle under my eyes because of the extended time I spend in front the laptop, but this is oh so wonderful. My experience is too little compared to most of other bloggers out there, but good things show up early, don't they.

|||   |||   |||
  • Determination [I used to quit as soon as I got bored or frustrated, but now I see myself almost always go all the way down when I want to create something.]
  • Prioritizing [Now my evening time is either about wandering around the web, reading my favorite blogs or developing my own. You can guess which one wins, right? I never understood people saying "I find some time in the weekend to go through my favorite blogs or I spend 15minutes each morning reading the news". Now I see the internet time is indeed limited and not enough to do everything every day.]
  • Pushing my limits [ It is always a marathon of new ideas, better blog appearance and structure, stronger writing and original content, while keeping my voice always like me ]
  • Consistency [Frankly, I feel so bad if I don't post daily, like skipping a day of school or leaving an exam for the fall season. Really!]
  • English refresh [You know English is not my native language and although I have studied it for almost 11 years, I still find myself getting words wrong and it breaks my heart, but still feel better the second time when I make the mistake no more.]
  • Valuation [While I guessed it is hard to find nice things to post, I didn't guess it takes forever to compose the post with all the stuff I want to get right.]

  • Networking [I always used to comment in blogs when I felt I had something to add or comment, but now I do it more often, because I know how important it is for a blogger to see that inbox full of notifications.]
  • Fast Forward Thinking [This is another one I didn't quite get, bloggers saying they are thinking of fall and winter holidays ideas from August. How is it possible, while all people want to do is have vacations and dream of the next ones? Well, now, hello Christmas from September!]
  • The importance of a journal [A simple notebook is so much better than the phone I used to write notes in until now. This post was originally written in my A6 notebook at 3 am right before bed time.]
  • Being the boss [You have to filter everything by yourself, leave out what is not good enough, correct yourself, take decisions and set limits for everything. It seems very contradictive as creative types don't like bosses, rules and being told what to do, yet they seek an alternative way with the strictest boss ever - themselves. Let's hope this kind of relation with myself is not going to end up with hate.]
  • Looking back [Oddly enough, since I was in elementary school, I never went back to check what I had written. Somehow I believed that the first thing I thought was right and whatever corrections I would make would create a non original content. This bad tradition has followed me strongly until today, but since I write in this blog I must go back from time to time. You know, grammar mistakes and making sense first of all, because thinking and writing fast is not always logical. It helps a lot that I think in English and I don't have to do all that disturbing process of writing in my language and translating, but still at times my thoughts run too fast and I have to keep them under control. But I only have a quick look, I don't feel comfortable reading the whole post.]
  • Being happy [Feeling passionate about something as little as your blog gives you the power to be happy no matter what the weather outside is or how much money you have left for this month. There's a secret world waiting for you, one where things are how you want them to be, happy, positive and inspiring. You feel good because you are getting inspired and thus people get inspired by you.
|||   |||   |||

Do you believe blogging has made you better at some things? Is it worth the time and effort you put into your blog? It is all about feeling accomplished and happy at the end of the day (or at the beginning of the new one) right?

Frozen Fall Outfits || Pleated skirt

It is not common to freeze meals here in the Balkans, but from today on I will embrace the tradition. For a twist, I will be freezing outfits! You might be feeling all clever now by recalling many other better ways to keep track of your outfits, but believe me, none of that has helped me. Not even Pinterest, phone notes, photos, drawings, shopping wishlists, nothing.
Let's hope that creating a post series about it will help me get into the habit of always having an outfit on hand, spend less in buying cheap stuff online and of course inspire myself and you to try nice things this fall. Because let's face it ladies, we are all going to feel like we have nothing to wear and we totally need a whole new closet of clothes and we swear this year we are starting our capsule/ basics' wardrobe by only buying good quality pieces, with timeless designs and classic values. While I will be praying for all of you to accomplish this, let's go on with plan B.

What can we not afford not buying this season and it can be paired with many of the items we already have and love? My first choice is a pleated skirt. It was hard for me to find one that complements my body shape, has a versatile length and is a neutral yet rich color. Brown! Was I scared of it first? Hell yeah. I hadn't even noticed it for several weeks, until I saw some beautiful images of brown and blue outfits. So classy, so feminine, so Fall-ish, so lovable. Now off I go to get the skirt and get out of the closet what I (and you) already have - a striped jumper, a chambray shirt and a white one.

What I love doing - Guest post at Apartment 34

Everyone has at least one thing they love doing so much, they don't realize when time flies by. For me, that happens when I get inspired to create something and I can visualize what I want it to look like at the end and the morning comes so fast while I am designing it in Photoshop.

That happened again a few nights ago. I saw that Erin of Apartment 34, one of the blogs I have been enjoying daily for the last year gave the opportunity to bloggers to create a Live Here Decorate With This post. And frankly I immediately wanted to be in her final choice. So I started digging through my Pinterest latest pins to find a lovely space. Well, I must admit I spent too much time sorting through as I am very bad at taking quick decisions between things I like, but when the right space came to my eyes, they blinked and of course it was it. Perfectly balanced between summer and fall, mountain and sea, a lovely place and nature infused. Who wouldn't like to recreate this atmosphere?

Soooo, this is what stole my heart, house of designer Tina Komninou in Hydra island, which I first admired at My Paradissi, the mother of lovely outdoor places, my favorite inspiration place :)

House images via here

If you would like to see the items I would pick to recreate this look into my vacation house or even in my humble balcony for the moment, head over to Apartment 34 and see the full post, along with other interesting posts of the same series by wonderful bloggers.

Sorry because I get carried away a bit. As you might have understood, Erin picked my submission to feature in her blog and I felt flattered, my all night work payed off and of course this motivated me to never stop doing what I love.

Sweeter Sundays

Yes, I know it is still Saturday in my timezone, but I wanted you to make this Sunday sweeter and post it on time. I assume, we are not the only family whose Sunday main topic is food. Most people use weekends to cook something special or to go out to their favorite place for lunch or even try new restaurants without guilt. It is difficult to drive outside the city and head to the suburbs and countryside because everyone living in the capital seems to be doing the same thing, with one goal : eat good food.

As a twist to this, why not indulge in gastronomy during another time, like brunch, afternoon or dinner? If you ask me, I choose breakfast no matter what. It is my favorite meal of the day and you can eat as much as you want because you have all day ahead to starve, right?! Breakfast is often underestimated, skipped or treated like a "coffee to go" or "apple in the school bag". I get really upset when I want to enjoy a real breakfast meal in my city and the only options I know are omelet, ham and cheese or poor crepes. The only decent place I have tried a different menu is Stephen Center, where I had breakfast twice and it was nice. I am also planning on trying La Voglia soon, after I found out it serves nice European things.
Feel free to recommend me any nice places that you happen to know

Of course if you don't want to splurge in eating out, you can always prepare a simple delicious meal yourself with  few fresh ingredients and a little fantasy. Get out in your garden, terrace or balcony. Treat your family and yourself to a pleasant time with addition activities like reading the newspaper or magazines, playing a board game, going through plans for the next week and chatting about everything you wish. Your children will embrace a healthy way of starting the day and your partner/friends will appreciate these bonding time.

What a beautiful Sunday start, right? And you can spend the rest of the day easily preparing for Monday or doing even more fun stuff, that you often can't engage to, after feeling like a balloon after eating a heavy lunch.
Enjoy :)

12 ways to beautify your rental home

This is the time of the year when rent rates go high sky in our capital, because many students come from other towns to attend universities and the majority of them rent a house. While there are few chances you can score a nice home not rented before with a pleasant decor, most of the time apartments or rooms are very poor furnished, with old stuff, no focus on function for a student's life and all in all not very nice. That is why I thought to make up a list of small things a girl or even a boy can do to freshen up the space, to add some personality and most of all to match it to their everyday needs and aesthetics.

1. Cover your bookshelves
You remember how you used to cover your books with sticker paper until middle school? Now it's time to do it with your bookshelves and even drawers. It keeps them cleaner, easier to wipe dust away and so much more pleasant. And it comes very cheap in some meters in a roll.

2. Dress your closet
Most rooms have a big odd wooden build in closet or this classic cheap two panels closet. Chances are it is not pretty, so you an camouflage it with some vinyl stencils you can find (in limited variety of course) in do-it-yourself big stores (Prealpina, Megatek, Jumbo) or order yourself the letters or shapes you want at a local printing company (most of them work with adhesive and it costs around 8 euros, you stick it yourself to save extra money).

 3. Chic in the living room
If you are lucky enough to have a separate living space, make it look grown up and chic with another kind of stencil, like this set of three bamboo trees. The options could be endless, but this way you avoid painting or putting nails on the wall (some house owners strictly forbid these).

4. Peaceful reading corner
The most important activity you will be doing in your new home will be reading and studying. Unless your field of studies does not involve projects that require a specific place (like architecture or engineering), build a reading corner with a cozy and comfortable chair, some space for books, sheets and stationery, good lighting and an inspiring poster. And don't forget the color scheme. It should be neutral, peaceful and warm for not making your eyes tired in the many sleepless nights waiting for you.

5. Don't change who you are
If you are a girly girl and back home you used to sleep in pink sheets, cuddling with dolls and bears don't be shy and try to change yourself into a serious person in case you are sharing your home with roommates. Your bedroom is your personal secret kingdom and you have the right to be surrounded by whatever makes you have and feel a little bit like home. So ladies, don't be afraid to grab all your pink stuff with you, along with your fluffy bears. If your mother or grandmother has been making lacy covers and tablecloths for your future house, steal a couple of them now and put them into your rental home. They make the space cozier and ladylike. And remind you of your family of course.

6. Mirror mirror on the floor
Usually you shouldn't wait for a lot of mirrors when you rent a space. I don't know why, but somehow people consider it unnecessary to have more than a little mirror. I know that investing in a big one might be extra expenses you can't afford now, but keep an eye on the supermarkets or home furniture shops that have them. Look for the sales, you might grab a good piece for a cheap price when you least expect it. If you want it very badly, search for a wood working master, they usually take orders and he can make you a look alike big mirror for very little money.
Add some white lights if you fancy and not only you will have more fun when dressing up in the morning, but your room will appear bigger too. Double the profit!

7. Cover ugly walls
Chipped, uneven wall surfaces, bliah paint colors ( I call them vomit of a cat - sorry) are not uncommon in the houses students rent. And frankly, sometimes the rent is not that low to justify these things. If I had the opportunity I would design beautiful bright places with good quality everything for students. As being away from the family, with limited budget is not enough, they have to live in a place not decent for a human being, let alone for inspiring you to read, study, create and have a social life !!
If you have the guts and time to negotiate, ask for the owner to fresh paint the house before you move in. It is very important to kill the bacteria of the previous renters and to prepare for winter cold and humidity. But let's be honest, this doesn't always happen, so instead propose to wallpaper the place, or at least one wall. This will hide the problems of the paint and will create a focus point in the room. Now there are removable wallpapers available and there is no problem to remove it when you leave.

8. Show your pictures
I am sure you have a lot of pictures, old and recent, of yourself, your family and friends. Don't keep them inside an album or a dusty box, but take them out instead and stick them on the wall. Create a heart shape or a rectangular one, or just go and stick irregularly, just like you feel like until you cover an entire side of your room.
You can do a lot of things with pictures. If you have some basic Photoshop skills, you can create effects to unify different pictures and group them together, make everything black and white or enlarge a few pictures and frame them. You will have original cheap art on the walls and you will feel your loved ones closer by being reminded of your memories together.

9. Beautiful tik - tak
If you hate early morning wake ups like me, you better get a nice alarm clock, something classy and beautiful, not the small cheap plastic ones that break once you throw them on the floor. You know what I am talking about, those with the annoying alarm clock. You can't always rely on your mobile phone because sometimes you might fall asleep without activating the alarm, sometimes you don't hear it, or something goes wrong and the alarm never rings, so be sure to have a decent clock by your bed.

10. Add some green
Oddly enough, we think of plants as outside only, or balcony only or high maintenance. But everyone, even a boy can look after a plaint, if it is a small one that doesn't require much light, water and care. Succulents or cactus as we call them are perfect. In a wide variety from tiny to big, different shades of green, so many shapes and families to choose from, everyone can choose their favorite or mix some of them. Put them in a corner in the living room, on your desk or by the window. Your space will look fresher and it is good for your health too.

11. Make room for everything
It is very important to find space for everything you have. Forget boxes and suitcases with hidden stuff inside. Chances are you will never use them for as long they are out of sight. Try alternative storing solutions, especially for the daily needs. If you have a loot of books, use crates as shelves. If you need more space for your clothes, try hanging them in a U shape tube you can hang in the ceiling. Don't neglect the small things, like jewellery, accessories and mostly stationery. Find your pencils and rulers by your desk, by utilizing cans, mason jars or small boxes as stationery organizers.

12. Improvise
If there is no bedside unit or you can't afford buying one, don't skip it. You will need something to place your books, gasses, water, skincare, jewellery, coins and everything small you can imagine all year long. Opt for an alternative piece you already have, or ask mum to bring from home. A small ladder or an old stool, a round side table, three suitcases stacked or a simple wooden cube can serve as a decent nightstand.

 |||   |||   |||
I hope you like these ideas. Of course they are not for students only, but for everyone renting or not, living alone or with family. Don't forget that home is our nest, it reflects who we are and what we like to be surrounded with. You can not feel good and rested and secure in a house that does not represent you. Go for small changes, things you can make yourself and cost little to nothing. Never stop decorating, moving things around, getting rid of old stuff and bringing in new. Play with your house, your room, your nook, and be inspired by the beauty around you :)

10 tips to make the most out of business trips

I am sure there are a lot of people who might have traveled far more than me and have much more business trips under their belt, but it would probably be helpful to share some little things I have noticed, experienced and figured out during mine.

1. Take care of sleeping
Believe it or not, I fell asleep once in the car while I had to translate. Embarrassing, but true my friends. Frankly, I feel sooo sleepy right after landing in the destination, especially if we have the whole day in front of us. I feel asleep while driving by car from place to place. That is why early morning flight should be avoided when you can, so you get to sleep as usual and then fly. Also, it is very important to find at least one hour to rest or nap in the afternoon, it makes a whole difference. I am not talking about the evening, because most of the time I found myself laying dead asleep in two minutes. It helps if you finish with your phone (good night sms-es/alarm clock for tomorrow/notes) as soon as you can, stay away from laptops and if you still can not sleep grab a book or magazine.

2. The right camera
I love having my big digital camera, but honestly it is such a problem when moving around, in meetings, in cars, while walking and while having a hundred stuff to carry around like I usually do. Phone cameras are a good solution but I feel a little bit sad when I only have that option, so I usually take a simple small camera that can fit in my pocket or bag wherever I go. Just be sure to take a couple of extra memory cards and spare battery because they love to abandon you when you most need them.

3. Early morning
Whatever the place you are staying in is, there will be something interesting about it. If you wake up a little bit earlier in the morning, beside your personal pleasures like reading the newspaper or exercising, you can pay a little bit attention to the space around you, enjoy a terrace or garden if available and my favorite one, explore the breakfast buffet. If you are in a rush you will start your day with zero excitement and nothing to look forward to in the evening or the next morning.

4. Shopping limit
Usually business trips have full days packed with meetings and travel, so you have to squeeze shopping time in limited time segments, or worse again before flying home. At first I was doubting I would manage to buy anything in a few hours, but when I had one hour sharp to get in and out of Zara, I sure made my feet and hands move fast. You don't want to know how much I spent, but that remains my record until now. This is not the example I want to show you. On the contrary, before your trip or at least the night before shopping take your time to make a list of what you need to buy for yourself and what presents to get for your loved ones. Knowing where to focus is essential when you are facing ten shops and a tic-tac-ing clock. And who knows, you might even get away with spending less then you had thought. Now, in case you have no budget or time at all to indulge yourself to new items, just grab some chocolate and snacks, a few magazines or books at a shop or at the airport.

5. Get closer to nature
Either by taking a walk, paying attention outside of the window if you are riding a car/bus/train, or simply peeking out of the windows/balconies of your hotel you can feel closer to the country's nature. For me, taste, smells and air are very strong memories and the more you gather, the more you will remember this trip. Look at the flora, the variety of trees and flowers, the fields, the mountains, the lake, the sea, the hills and the leaves. There is something revitalizing and refreshing about keeping in touch with nature, so don't neglect it.

6. Sneak peak into architecture
For sure you can not visit every sight in the city in a short trip, but that does not stop you from observing, noticing and taking notes. Look at the buildings, distinguish any architectural style that is random, write down interesting buildings or parts of the city that you would like to know better if you pay a second visit to the particular place. Oh man, look at those buildings' details. You sure may smile when passing by them but you can not possibly glance at every window or swan over every little charming detail because chances are you might be engaged in a conversation, walking fast or just focused on taking pictures. Snap a lot of them, no matter if they come up blurry to help refresh your memory when back home dreaming of the city and its secrets.

 7. The extra curricular activities
Always ask for the extra things you might have the chance to enjoy, like the use of sauna, jacuzzi, garden, pool, field trips, bike rentals, mini guides, eat and drink suggestions, massages and the list goes on and on...You will be surprised at how much little things are there to make our days brighter and the evening sore feet less painful. In my last trip I could not rent a four wheel motorcycle staying at the front of the hotel (obviously), but I made all my effort to end the dinner sooner and jump into the pool for half an hour before it got closed. The second time around in the same charming hotel, I was strolling around more easily, enjoying every corner I could for a few seconds. This way I was feeling a bit like a tourist and not like "all work and no fun".

8. Hug your room
No matter what hotel you are in and what room category you have. There is something familiar and something cute about each room (somehow this is true) and you better find those two (or more) elements the sooner the better. To make the place feel more like home or more like you, have a small nice smelling candle in your luggage (I love vanilla), your favorite soap (Dove forever) and something you have left half read by the bed. Whenever you have the chance, skip eating out or in the the hotel's restaurant and order food in your room. Furthermore, if possible go downstairs and create a plate by yourself (choose cheeses, ham, fruits, desert and juice or wine), or simply order in a sandwich or local snack/meal.

9. Keepsake
This is my favorite tip. I try to have a certain empty pocket in my bag (or usually my entire bag) to carefree toss tickets, bills, ads, fliers, sugar bags, stickers, plastic coffee spoons, clothing tags, small flowers or leaves and everything you can imagine. Even if I have no time or possibility to enjoy a few hours for myself, I can always go home and puzzle up the memories from the traveling days. When I feel extra crafty and inspired I put everything into a notebook like a minimalistic scrapbook, but the stuff from my last trip are still tossed in a plastic zipped bag. Still better than nothing though, I can always go back to them without worrying if they belong to the same trip or not.

10. All wide open
No, eyes wide open are not enough. You need all your senses to the maximum. Beside of rocking your business meetings and closing deals with success, you can use your abilities and chances to experience everything to the maximum. Look around, check out the people, see how they talk, eat, drink, laugh, high five, cross the street. Sit down in a caffee by yourself and take mental notes of everything going on around you. Don't forget to smell the air, laugh at funny things and let go small stuff. This is a trip, this is a new country, you are in a new city so all you have to do is to build as much bright memories as you can.
Enjoy :)

A little secret about me

  •
While I wanted to make a series of posts the last days about me and little things I do or cannot do, it seemed a bit too much. Who am I to reveal stuff about myself and pretend other people care about it? But reading Joy's post gave me a good idea. If these little things are positive and good, than why not share them? I mean good things never did someone bad, right? Acts of kindness and generosity must happen more and more in this world of individualism and selfishness. I will do my best to write about small true things that I remember doing or willing to do like this first one below. Hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoy making others happy and smiley.

[ This afternoon it was raining in my city. We were driving to get a coffee like always. My man had just bought two ice creams for us. As soon as I started enjoying mine, we passed by a guy riding his loaded bicycle, with his head uncovered and probably very wet. I said "Let's give him my ice cream!". But it was too late, we left him behind and if we had slowed down and try to talk to him he wouldn't have stopped (dark and rainy - duh!). I don't know why I felt like that (beside that I am a good person hahaha), all was very sudden and we did not do it eventually. But I wish we did it and he accepted my unwrapped and licked ice cream. You still get my point, I hope. The need to make a small gesture of happiness to a total stranger was enough to make me feel good. Maybe he doesn't like ice creams or he has a sore throat, but who knows, he might have smiled to us and that would mean everything I needed for today. ]

Do you ever feel the urge to help strangers, or surprise them in a way or another? Do you think it is meaningless while people have so many problems we can't solve for them, or is it enough because it fills us with kindness?

Sweeter Sundays

Unlike many others, that I'm jealous of, I don't enjoy Sundays since early childhood. While the true reason might be very deep and psychological or even a result of routine, I fear the feeling of being moody, uninspired, sleepy, hungry and numb all day. Thus most of those 7th days we end up in the neighborhood having the usual coffee in an old favorite bar, where you feel like a loser while all the cook people are out there away from you doing something great. In tribute to forcing myself change this stupid (lack of) things to do and maybe inspire some of you a little bit, I will be turning into another direction, alternative ways to enjoy ordinary things a little more.

To go to your usual or favorite spot, get off your usual path. Take another way or take a long stroll around the city, and when possible head to the suburbs.

Don't hesitate to slow down or even stop when you see something interesting or worth capturing by your camera or phone.

If you think a path or slope or route could be leading you to somewhere nice, then follow it, don't be afraid to delay a while. Call me silly, but I have this thing for narrow streets going in an up or down direction, I secretly believe they take you to a magic place, unusual for what is going on around and what someone might expect. Maybe you won't find anything special, but you just do it.

And who know, sometimes you can find yourself in a totally dreamy landscape, one you didn't know existed and one that seems so ridiculously beautiful to have been in your city forever without you being there before.

Even if you cannot do much there, just snap a few pictures, breath the air for a while and see what is going on around. What the plants and flowers are, what the houses look like (if any), what activities do you spot and other details help you build memories and enjoy your exploration for longer after you go home and think about it all week.

And please remember that sometimes all we need to do to run over something interesting be it Sunday or not, is to turn our perspective a few angles. Try staring down and explore the ground or just turn your sight up to what's going on to the sky.

However, if none of the above happens, you will end up cherishing a ride and a conversation with your loved ones or friends. Let's enjoy our sweeter Sundays to come!

I have a question

Usually people use to write about their tips and process openly in their blog after they have reached a certain point of being successful. But I am so into the process that I am thinking to share some things with you every now and then. I would like to put out my questions and concerns as a non experienced blogger and show you my journey if you are interested. Hopefully some of you will laugh hard and some others might shake heads remembering the times they had the same problems.
Feel free to answer my questions or to share your stories.
Here I go:

I have been reading blogs for at least two years before I gave mine a shot. Occasionally, when the post was appealing to me, or it needed my opinion I have shared my thoughts and comments. And of course I appear as Lisa (short for my difficult real name), with a link to a profile and an empty blog.
Now that I have started posting, I keep on commenting on my favorite blogs. Sometimes I want to write my blog url at the end of the comment so that the awesome blog host can have a look at my place, because how would they know I have my own blog otherwise?! But I am pretty hesitating most of the time, as it feels very cheap. I have always been fond of playing fair my whole life, and now I am magically assuming people will find out about my awesome blog and will fight to comment first to my posts. While I know that has not any chance of happening, without some good well spread marketing (I have not even told my closest friends and family about Happy By - Hah!) I still avoid writing my url, as I don't want people to think I am commenting asking them a favor to check out my blog. Of course I will keep on reading them and commenting them even if they never pay back a visit here, but hey, it's sooo nice when you see someone actually get to see what are you up to, like dear Anna of Honor of Design, Rachel, Clara, and Boheme de Luxe did along with local bloggers who are supporting each other (thank you Eranda, Jonki, and Aulona).
Eventually, even when I go for it a few times, I feel bad, like I am cheating or promoting my blog in the wrong way. Sure, I have to do it more often because that is the only fast way to spread out the word, but I have to do a lot of work convincing myself if it is right or not. However I respect all those wonderful comment makers who are not afraid to write down their link.

Have you ever had this dilemma? Is it right to let others know about your blog when you are commenting their posts or you better spread the news by "viral marketing" amongst friends and family?

Party in a box

Back in July I got a lovely package at the post office, right before my birthday. I won a giveaway (my first one - yay!!) hosted by Victoria of A Subtle Revelry, a blog I have been reading everyday the last year. The gift was a party kit by the Party in a box company and I got some dotted invites and envelopes, polka dots paper straws, a couple of balloons and wooden cutlery. The lovely Giulia, owner of the Canadian shop made sure to post the package immediately and by airmail, so I could have it on time for my birthday. I am a sucker for party kits, picnic stuff and everything dotted and colorful.

What made my heart bump of excitement was a handwritten note by Giulia wishing me. That little touch was a present on its own. One might say it is such a little gesture and wonder why am I even pointing that out. Because she might have just send me the goodies and that's all, I wasn't even buying the kit, I won it, so you get my point. I have always admired people who put that little extra touch, especially those in the business. We don't get to see that much everyday, so I encourage you to go a little step further anytime you can when it costs nothing.

Back to the kit, my favorites are the straws and the wooden cutlery. I didn't use them all for my birthday, so I am looking for a way to bring them out in these last hot sunny days, probably in a special picnic I am planning (I will post more about this in the following days).  What I am still undecided about is whether to keep the main palette white so these cuties pop out probably, or to pair them down a little with neutrals and more grown up hues. I will let you know soon ;)

Thank you Victoria and Giulia for the lovely gift and for being great at what you do :)

Twist on Fall Trends

The new fall-winter trends have been bursting everywhere the past weeks. Most of us, who can't wait are already well packed for the new season, but I am sure not every trend out there is for everyone and no offense, but some are even not that great.
I have to confess when I saw this new trend for the first time, my mind flashed back to my 6th or 7th grade. That year the burgundy and deep purple were honored and I had a faux leather coat (I am not so proud of that period of my life) and matching shoes (I wish I knew where they disappeared).
So you can guess I wasn't exactly over enthusiastic about it. But as proved for the past years blogs and websites makes you embrace and like everything sooner or later, partly because you see it everywhere and partly because you discover some acceptable ways to incorporate it into your outfits.
For this reason I am inspired to propose you three alternatives to get (out of the closet if you already have them) burgundy or oxblood, as they call it now.

1 || Bedding in wine by Anthropology

You might have has this for a long time as a wedding present or vintage find and never had the guts to put it out. Fall is the perfect time to introduce deep colors to your room decor, paired with neutrals like white earthy tones like mustard and library green.

2 || Body in oxblood by Topshop

This item is very probably to never go out of use as can be worn as a layer or focus point of your upper outfit. You can make it feel goth, rock, minimal, luxury or sexy, it's up on you to accessorize and match things.

3 || Pleated lace skirt in purple by Topshop
I was a little bit doubtful about this at first, but how cute will it be next spring with white and tan or pastel hues? Girly and romantic enough to not look kitch and with an edgy cut to make you feel modern and on time with the new trend.

Tip : Tend towards more purple-ish and plum-ish colors that can have the chance to still stay in your wardrobe when the trend is gone (history has been very bad to this color) and be paired with pastel hues, naturals or luxury materials.

Have fun shopping and finding the right hue for you!

How to find the perfect ring

While the weddings season is almost over in Albania, a lot of people are thinking and planning of getting engaged or even married not that the new air of fall is in the air. You can have an headache even when slightly thinking what expects to be planned for the event, but let's go baby steps. What is the first thing you need, beside a loved one? The ring of course. Sometimes people make the romantic proposal without one, if they happen to be in the middle of nowhere while vacations or because the idea hits them immediately, but they need to get the real thing after that very soon.

To some choosing a ring is easy and fun, to some it is difficult to choose because they want them all, and to folks like me other issues may occur. I personally like different things, far from what I see on others' hands or wedding pictures. Honestly, I don't like the majority of classic rings out there because they seem to be very similar to each other.
After long research and talk with myself (it is hard to understand what you truly love and need) I have narrowed down my choices and have figured out several rules and in case you have "special needs" like me, have a look and help yourself from feeling "blank" during the hunt of a diamond.

1. Go simple - stoneless
This is a very smart and safe choice, especially for engagement as it is enough to have something representing love, but not hitting the bank high with something you are not sure you will always like. You can play with texture, models, carving and shapes. Here are a few alternatives.

2. Go bold - colored stone
I have always been fond of the rich colors of big colored stones (emerald, pink sapphire, ruby, citrine, etc). While you might think it is risky to go for it as it might not look like an eternity ring, let me tell you that if you feel like that it's enough. Rings are no longer a sign of commitment for others to see but a pleasure for our heart to enjoy and be able to maintain everyday. If you are bold enough to rock your rock wherever whenever, don't hesitate. See for yourself.

3. Timeless - from the past
While most people can bet with me that a timeless ring should be contemporary or classic, I have this thing for old, vintage and thematic eras rings. Especially art deco models make my heart mellow. Maybe it is the gorgeous details or the veil of mystery and aristocracy they carry, but they are one of a kind for sure. If you don't like to hold one that used to belong to a stranger, opt for a vintage like model made for you but inspired from the past, like the ones below.

3. Design it
If you have the time and budget to design your own ring, everything is solved. Well you need a very skilled vendor to create it and if you choose a jewellery shop be sure to have a copyright contract in case you don't want your design to be produced in mass.

4. The best of the rest
This might be the easiest alternative. Looking at thousands of contemporary rings on the web, I have noticed that some of them might not be that bad. When the diamond is big (bonus if colorful) and the shape interesting, they blink at me. You might consider this alternative for last minute shopping, or when budget is limited or even for a non fussy situation. My favorite cut is the cushion and the round one.

There are a lot of choices out there, but no one can choose better than you. I strongly suggest couples to go shopping together, to avoid unpleasant surprises if the groom or family and friends help deciding for the ring. Or at least collect some images online or from magazines and share them with your future husband, so he can have a clear idea of what you like. Then leave the budgeting and final word to him to maintain the romantic essence.
Don't forget that apart from how beautiful a ring looks, you should check if it suits your fingers (if you have not so regular, long and lean fingers you won't be comfortable in a thick surface one) and if it is easily maintainable (you don't want soap/dirt/dust leftovers on your precious jewellery and falling diamonds) and of course if it pairs well with casual or dressy outfits.
Good luck choosing and remember that you will love and cherish it forever, as soon as you get the perfect for you ring!
